10th Grade Notes, Extra Credit, and Homework Assignments
Hello! Welcome to the 10th Grade Poetry Unit. Below are my notes from class with which you must study for quizzes. Also included are good writing tips, expectations, and assignments by the date they are due.
Extra Credit
Poetry Project
Use one poem from your Poetry Book in one of the following ways:
1) Create an advertisement for the content of your poem or use the ad to promote poetry. If you choose to promote poetry, you still must use one of the poems from your book.
2) Write a two page, double spaced report on the content of one of your poems.
3) Research any of the following poets and write a report or create a visual with facts from your research. 2 Pages, double spaced:
a. Langston Hughes
b. Shel Silverstein
c. Walt Whitman
d. Lord Alfred Tennyson
e. William Blake
f. Nikki Giovanni
g. Ralph Waldo Emerson
h. Edgar Allen Poe
4) Draw/Paint/Collage/Print/Glitterize/Sculpt/Etc... a visual image that represents your poem. Make sure the poem is either a part of the picture, written on the back, or placed as a part of the project somehow.
5) Translate your poem into another language. Below are resources. Include elements of that language's culture in your presentation (which can be a poster-board, a *nice*, professional piece of card-stock or paper, or anything else approved by me).

Class Notes & Homework
Before you start studying and putting your Poetry Book together, here are some notes from class that I have provided for your quiz on the elements of literature, as well as the different kinds of poetry. If you need anything, e-mail me at [email protected]. :)
Here are the two poems that you've written together as a class:
2nd Period:
Socks
The stench of wool after three years' use
They keep my feet warm and toasty
So fluffy and light, fill my feet with delight-
They radiate on a day like today...
and reek like the German souffle.
6th Period:
Log Cabin
Log cabin burns
Crackles through the air
Fire spreads to the forest
Animals fly away
All that remains are ashes.

Guidelines for the monologues & scenes: -If you have a character with substantial lines, choose a monologue or scene from the play that you can do with another character or by yourself. -If you have a character that does not say much, write a monologue or scene with knowledge you may need to make up based on how you think the character would respond in the context of the play. -You will perform this. If you cannot bring yourself to perform it, then please read it to the class as a public oration. |
Friday[2/22]
No school! Make sure you study this weekend via your study guide & other questions, as well as your vocabulary. Your test is Tuesday, & your performances are Wednesday.
